Introductions - India

C.M. George - georgec@usefid.ernet.in

I am C.M. George (it should be George C.M. - Mr.). I administer Fulbright fellowships to Indian scholars, and am also the Systems Manager for all our four offices - in Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras.

I began my career as a High School teacher some thirty years ago, and education continues to be my prime interest. I believe in the key role of education in human development.
A recent survey by World Bank identified South Asia as the repository of the bulk of world's poor. I won't contest it, because I know it is true. Several reasons such as population explosion, climate, lack of natural resources, political instability, corruption, terrorism, war preparation, etc. etc. are said to be the main reasons for the maladies that we face. However, I for one, believe that it is the lack of proper, the right kind of, education that is the prime perpetrator of poverty in this region.

I also believe that dialogs and discourses alone are not enough, but
concrete action. However, we do get ideas, and often
assistance, through interactions with people of similar interest or
concerns. Therefore, I might be more of a 'receiver' than a
contributor to the interest group on the Fulture of Higher Education and
Learning.

I look forward to a very meaningful interaction with all the members.

George
