Introductions - Netherlands

Paul Forbes, Netherlands - Paul.Forbes@ALG.VLK.WAU.NL

Hello

My bucolic role in life is as a Senior Lecturer at The University of Sydney, Orange Agricultural College (Australia). At present I am on sabbatical at Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands.

My interest in this workshop stems from my sabbatical. I have been delivering a unit on Strategic Management to students back at Orange via use of web page and email discussions. The material for that course (if by chance it is of interest) is accessible using:
www.sls.wau.nl/vlk/pef/cpsm/a01cpsm.html
This has been an interesting experience, as one curse goes.

I am hoping to hear a lot on what people have used that has worked and was interested to see that there are people involved who have achieved excellence in their teaching activities.
Paul Forbes

I am Senior Editor at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, The Netherlands; I am also a writing teacher, and have taught writing courses at the University of New Hampshire, Harvard University, ISS, Eindhoven University of Technology and Delft University of Technology. For the next five summers I will also be teaching at the University of Namibia in Windhoek. For the past decade or so all of my students have been postgraduate students or faculty members. My central goal is to help them develop the skills and insights that will get their research into print. Doing this well pushes me to look at many related areas, the use of technology being only one.

Frans de Vijlder - vijlder@worldaccess.nl

I work as a Senior Advisor in a small strategic policy unit at the ministry of Education, Culture & Science of the Netherlands. Last year I finished my dissertation called 'Nation State and Education. An Essay on the Erosion of the Relationship between Nation-States and their Education Systems'. This (dutch language) dissertation contains an analysis of the concurrent rise of modern nation-states and national education systems (higher education included) since about 1800 in Germany, France, The Netherlands, England and the United States. It contains a number of scenarios for the future, based on the influence of the driving forces individualisation and globalisation.
