I bought Daihatsu Storia X4/(In export name:Sirion)on July 1st 1998. My car will be arriving at the end of September 1998. This special X4 edition of Storia is only available up to 30 cars per year and are order based manufacturing. On July 24 1998, Daihatsu decided to terminate selling for the 1998 edition of Sotira X4. If anyones interested in buying X4 will have to wait next year for ordering.
Storia X4(pronounced "cross four") is designed by Daihatsu Coopertaion to serve as a base vihicle for domestic motor sports use. Because X4 is optimized for high competition rally, there is no air-conditioners, power assisted windows, and even radios. In addition power assisted steering is optional and are not standardly equipped.. There is no optional air conditioners, this is because there is no room for air compressor units to set inside the engine room. Storia X4 is only available via pre-ordering. In addition, only 30 X4s' are available each year. Manufacturing of Storia X4 is limited to 30 each year. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS would be a good example which is more like Storia X4 but they have much more availability.

I first noticed Daihatsu Storia X4 On May 1998 in a Japanese Bi-weekly and Monthly magazine called "Holiday Auto" and "Car Top". Both magazines aggresively described this Hot-Hutch because it was totally unique in its characteristics.
Storia is designed and advertised as a base vehicle for the motor sports competition use in April 10th 1998. This car is taken as pre-order based manufactuing process, and also it is a limited edtion and up to only 30 vihicles are availble per year. First year, for special case, Daihatsu pre-orderd 30 Storia X4s' in April and will be selling another 30 limits for 1998 edition. My order number was (15 or 16)/30. Daihatsu is manufacturing only couple of Storia X4s' per month.
Below are brief characteristics and specification of Storia X4.
In Japanese A1 Class motor sports, turbo charged engines will have to multiply its displacement capacity 1.4 times. Storia X4 engines are desiged to fit less than 1 Litter class with multiple of 1.4 as a turbo charged engine. (713*1.4=998.2cc). Japanese "Kei-Jidousha" or sometimes called as a "Japanese Mini-Cars" has 660cc capacity, but Storia X4 has souped upped its cylinder upto total of 713cc. With large capacity ball bearing turbo-charger and Electronic Fuel Injection mechanism, Storia X4 does not need to limit its horse-power to "Mini-Car regulations" in Japan. This small engine grows upto 120hp(ps)@7200rpm and maximum torques upto 13.0Kg-m@4800rpm. Engine is newly developed as a JC-DET type. This new engine with longer piston stroke is based on the engines equipped in "Mira Turbo" JB-JL type. Over-rev zone for this engine is approx. 9200RPM and Tacho meter has capability to tell upto 10000RPM!.
This mini-car equipped with only 713cc displacement reqires Japanese standard unleaded premium gasoline (nearly 100 octane gasoline). It is very rare in Japan for this type of small engine to use a premium gas. Subaru Vivio and few minicars do requires a premium gas though. Compression ratio is lowerly limited to 8.0. With more boost with its high compression turbo charger unit, this low compression ratio is required.
To have a maximum output of 120ps by adding 1.2Kg/cm boost, large capacity ball bearing turbo charger is needed. Here is a quote from "Option" monthly magazine.
"This engine carries out 1.2Kg/cm boost ratio in normal condition. But by adjusting "adjustable actuators" which is included with this engine, and also insure the fuel compression, normal computer controllor will justify the fuel adjustment for a maximum boost upto 1.7Kg/cm!"Turbine used in this engine is IHI RHF4 ball bearing turbine. A/R ratio is 16. This turbine is much bigger than the ones built for Mira series. Surge air tanks is also bigger compared to JB-JL Mira engine. With 1.7Kg/cm boost ratio, this engine could go upto 200hp(ps):-).
WRC like intercoolor washer for water cooling of the intercooler. Intercooler is REALLY large compared to other type of mini-cars. Window washer fluid is shared for this intercooloer washer.
16Bit microprocessor controlled.
僕は，まだ車の趣味を最近開拓したばかりだったので，始めはこれの 意味が分かりませんでした．悔しかったのでカーメカニックを読みあさって 理解致しました．「冷え型」がいわゆる高熱価というやつです． これを見てもこのエンジンは「回すエンジン」であるのが 分かります(笑)．4000回転以下の低回転はかなり不得意とみた!
鋳造(ちゅうぞう)よりも，分子構造が密なので，耐久性が高いそうです．ただ し，ちょっと重くなります．耐久性が高い分，少ない材質で同じ強度の物を 造ることができるので，軽量化に貢献できるそうです． この部分の強化のおかげで，かなりのブーストアップにも対応できます． コンロッドは鍛造じゃないのかな?コンロッドも軽量化(笑)．
大口径といっても，「713ccのエンジンとしては．．．」という意味なので， 変な解釈しないようにね(笑)．どうも，「大口径」っていうと，GT-Rに フジツボ12Φマフラーとか連想しちゃうけど(笑)．もし，そんなの付けたら 最低地上高が大変なことになっちゃうもんね．トルクの低さから見ても， ヌケはよさそうなマフラを付けていると思います．よくフケるという 雑誌の試乗記もそれを物語っています．
クロスレシオってcross-ratioなのか，close-ratioなのか，時々 悩む．．どちらかというと後者が意味的にあっているような． 雑誌には，cross-ratioってよく書いてありますね．辞書的には Close Ratioが正解です．
この車のギアレシオは見ていると楽しくてしょうがなくなります． 1,2,3速がめちゃくちゃクロスしてます．逆に，4速，特に5速ですが， 巡行用のためかハイギヤードな設定になっているので，ギアチェンジ がちょっと大変そうです(笑)．ラリーでは，若干ギアボックストラブル でリタイヤしている車種が見受けられるので，パワーアップした時は 要注意なのかもしれないですね(まだ未確認)．3速がかなり使えそうです．
keiさん曰く「げっ!メタルクラッチだぁ．．こんなんじゃ町中走れないじゃん!」 とのことですが，さてさて，どんな感じだか楽しみ楽しみ．とにかく ちょっとのクラッチの操作で繋がってしまうらしいです(これはCarTop6月号の 評価記事による)．町中の渋滞では気を使いそうですね．雑誌に載っている 試乗記によると，ほとんどのレポータがクラッチの重さと繋がりのシャープさ を指摘していました．クラッチの重さは．．．かなり重いです． 覚悟が必要だと思います．
LSDは人間の才能を．．．．じゃなくて(笑)，Limitted Slip Differentialの 方ですね．前と後ろ，両方ついてます．雪雪君でも，雨雨君でも，ドライでも タイヤを削りながら走ってくれることでしょう(笑)．メンテナンスが大変 な部品の一つです．メカニカル式を採用しています． デフオイルの交換はマメにしましょう．3000Km〜5000Kmが目安となります．
初代ストーリアなのに強化とは，これいかに?(笑)．まぁ，一言でいうと 「がちがち」です．どれぐらい「ガチガチ」かというと，CDプレーヤや MDを付けるような仕様ではないことからもお分かりかと思います(笑)． 雑誌のレポートによると，それほどガチガチでも無く，ロールもけっこう するような感じです．足廻りの写真をPD誌で見たのですが， 「強化」が目で確認できる程強烈に強化されているわけではなさそう です．ラリー仕様の足周りです．
カタログ見て笑っちゃいました．「特徴」として「軽量化」って，おい． プレイステーションのグランツリズモじゃないんだから(笑)．ステージI かなぁ?(笑)ステージIIぐらいになると後部座席が無くなってしまうので しょう(笑)．実物を見ていないのですが，主に遮音に関する部分の省略 がメインとなっています．不要な装備の排除など．PL法対策だと思いますが， カタログの注意書きに「軽量化のため，騒音や振動が一般車に対して大きい 場合があります．ご了承ください．」と追記されています． 昔の車ってでもこのサイズで840Kgだと重い方だったのですが，やはり 剛性を上げるために重くなったのでしょうね．
パワーステアリングは，ない方がいいかもしれないです．けっこう利点ないと 思うのは私だけ?メーカもオプションにしたのは正解だと思います．ただ，太い タイヤや，グリップのめちゃくちゃいいタイヤを履くのだったら， つけたほうがいいのかもしれません．この車には165/65R14がぴったり だと思います．175/60R14はちょっとオーバーかもしれないです． ホイールは14inch 5JJ Offset 40mmという仕様になっています． パワーステアリングを装備しないのでしたら，14inch 6JJ以上の ホイールは付けない方が良いと思います．腕っぷしが自慢な方は 別として．あと，ステアリングのLock to Lockは3.64回転と けっこうdullです(未確認)．
やっぱメーカー純正オプションのホイールでしょ!．ちょっと逃熱が わるそうな気もするけど，あんまりかっこいいホイールつけて戦闘的 な足じゃこまっちゃうもんね! セールスの方はEnkeiのマグホイール をお勧めしてました(笑)．まぁ，スタッドレスに替えた時にでも．
是非付けましょう．更に剛性があがります．はたしてこれが， いわゆるストラットタワーバーなのかは不明です． パフォーマンスロッドって下の補強リブかもしれないし． これつけると，事故った時大変って言う人いますが，事故る事 自体が大変なのを忘れがちです．このパフォーマンスロッドですが， 納期は1998年9月頃からとの事です．
見た目だけですね．あと，雨の日の雨よけとしてはけっこういいと思います． 僕はつけないけど．これが空力的に機能するかどうかはちょっと疑問です． ファッションですね．
With 1 litter of gasoline, this car runs upto 17km milage in10-15 mode configuration. Bit if you use a turbo boost assist, you will get less milage, probably lower than 11km per litter.
Equipped with 37 litter gasoline tank. This car may raun about an average of 11 to 13Km per litter. So you will have to worry about the gas station when your trip meter goes higher than 300km!.
